Located just a 3-minute walk from Shinjuku Station, 'Nakizakana' Shinjuku Branch is a restaurant specializing in carefully selected seafood and sake. They offer a variety of fresh fish dishes, depending on what's available that day. I recently visited their 'Hana-re' (annex) location and enjoyed the 'Okamoto Course' for 6,500 yen. The course included seasonal chawanmushi (savory egg custard), three types of appetizers, salad, shiira (mackerel tuna) sashimi, shiira fry, shiira grilled, and salmon rice cooked in a clay pot. You can choose your preferred way to eat the fresh fish, and you might even encounter a fish you've never seen before. If you're unsure about how to prepare a particular fish, the staff will gladly recommend the best way to cook it. I chose shiira, which is delicious whether you have it as sashimi, fried, or grilled. They also have a wide selection of sake to pair with your fish.

For a dinner gathering with my Okinawan friend in Shinjuku, we chose "Nakizakana Hanare." Run by A-P Holdings, they source seafood from fishermen and fishing ports across Japan through their unique distribution network, ensuring exceptional freshness. At Hanare, they introduce the day's catch right in front of you, even recommending the best ways to prepare it. For the finale, we were recommended the "Jewel Bowl" and couldn't resist ordering it. The bowl, adorned with snow crab, ikura (salmon roe), tobiko (flying fish roe), and karasumi (dried mullet roe), vanished in a flash! They also have a selection of rare sake, perfect pairings for the seafood. If you're looking for a touch of luxury, I highly recommend it!

This is one of my favorite restaurants. You can choose your own fish and enjoy it in your preferred style (sashimi, tempura, simmered, etc.). The fish is brought to your table and you can choose it right there. The interior isn't like the typical cheap, dirty izakaya, but it's not overly formal either, so it's suitable for various occasions. There's a location near Shinjuku Station, and I've been to both. The Shinjuku branch has much better staff quality than the other one, so unless there's a specific reason, I'd recommend choosing this one. It's recommended for groups because you can order different types of fish and enjoy them in various ways.

I think it's a great deal to be able to enjoy this much food for under ¥9,000! Personally, I wish they had a wider selection of sake. Most of the sake on the menu is priced under ¥2,000 retail. They should offer higher-end sake that pairs well with seafood, like 'Manshu' or 'Juyondai'. The cover charge is ¥530 per person. We ordered: - Saba Heshiko (fermented mackerel) - ¥590 - Isaki (Japanese sea bream) - ¥2,880 - Nisin (herring) - ¥1,980 We didn't order the all-you-can-drink option, but the restaurant has a 2-hour time limit. Even though we were only there for an hour, I felt like they were trying to rush us out by quickly clearing our plates. It was a bit off-putting.
