I was looking for a coffee shop around Ueno Station and found this place. It's one of the famous coffee shops in this area, along with Ojo. Established in 1963 (Showa 38), the entrance has a retro European feel, and you're immediately greeted by stained glass. The staff is all female. The 'mama'-like staff member greeted me as soon as I entered, and I appreciated the welcoming service, even for a solo coffee break. The interior furniture and decor are all retro, creating a wonderful atmosphere... I love it! As a high-class coffee shop, the prices for breakfast and lunch are a bit higher than a regular coffee shop. But I'm more than satisfied to relax in this space. (Maybe it's cheap for Tokyo prices?) * Chocolate toast + coffee set ¥950 (The toast was ordinary, so there wasn't anything special about it. The coffee was delicious.) By the way, the smell might not be suitable for those who don't like cigarettes!
I visited on a Saturday afternoon. I went around 11:30 AM! There was a line forming outside around noon, so I'm glad I went a little early 😊. They have a cake set, and I had the chocolate cake and coffee! The cake had a rich chocolate flavor and was delicious, and the coffee paired perfectly. It was all very tasty! It's a hidden gem located in the basement, a wonderful space enveloped in stained glass! I'd love to go again 😊.
I visited around 11:30 AM on a weekday Thursday. This is a famous, long-standing coffee shop in this area, alongside Ojo, but it was my first time here. I ordered the daily pasta special, which came with a drink; today's was mentaiko pasta. The portion size is a bit small, so it might not be enough for younger people. The pasta was cooked al dente, which I liked. It was delicious. The sofas are comfortable and relaxing, and you sink into them, so they might not be ideal for eating at the table or working. It's best to relax here and enjoy the interior decor and music. The young female staff were very kind, which was a nice touch. It has a different atmosphere than Ojo, so coffee shop fans who haven't been here before should definitely visit!
I had been wanting to go for a while, so I finally made it. There were a few customers lined up before opening, but the store is spacious, so it probably takes about an hour and a half to fill up? (I left an hour after opening, so I'm not sure.) The atmosphere inside is amazing. It's a shop that seems to have everything that people who enjoy visiting cafes and coffee shops are looking for. If you come to Ueno early in the morning, I highly recommend stopping by.
A wonderful retro coffee shop in Ueno. My excitement rises as I see the large stained glass on the stairs leading down to the basement. The interior is also lovely. There's beautiful stained glass inside as well. I sat down on a well-worn chair and ordered the Napolitan. I always end up ordering Napolitan at coffee shops. The lunch set comes with a mini salad (it's really mini...) and a drink. The Napolitan was ordinary, nothing particularly distinctive, but the taste was good. Smoking is allowed, so those who dislike the smell and smoke of cigarettes should be careful. I'm a non-smoker, but I love retro coffee shops, so I really like the atmosphere of this place. I hope it continues to thrive as a pillar of Japanese coffee shop culture.
